Why Is There A Skateboard Club?
NC State University was never famous for accepting skateboarders into their athletic community. But, nowadays, North Carolina State University acknowledges all of our four wheeled friends zooming from class to class, clicking over the bricks and flying between the weary pedestrians who crowd the sidewalks. No longer is it a crime to ollie or manual; no longer is being a student skateboarder at the university a stigma! Free to express our artistic integrity - through switch backside tail slides and nollie heelflip front heels - we are glad to provide the open forum of a community for you, to do what you love to do. So Finally, let all of us at NC Skate and the local skateboarding community of Raleigh, welcome anyone who has felt that they do not have representation on this campus, or everyone who enjoys watching someone throwing themselves down a flight of steps on a plank of wood with four wheels. I want to show Mr. Wuf how to kickflip!
How Did It All Happen?
NC Skate provides skateboarders with a club in which they could do what they love the most - skateboard! It took several months to prove to the school that there was enough interest on campus for such a club, but we found the support, filled out the forms, and eventually established NC Skate - an official, school affiliated, skateboard club! We’re maybe twenty or so strong right now, but we hope to find more and more skaters to empower the club until we can one day find intramural competitions - or better yet - another way to whoop UNC and Duke!!! President of the club, Lee Kennedy, and myself, Matthew Cote - an official officer, have managed to manufacture a voice for anyone who felt oppressed by the lack of respect at school. Campus police, whether by bicycle or horseback, have slapped us back with citations and fine with no way to appeal the ancient laws constricting our freedom to ride. But our campus has been improved. Skateboarders are no longer the vandal long boarder - oh no! We are a collective spirit of artistic endeavors found in the grinded, the ollied and the manualed. Outside of the box, we are beyond the handrail and the staircase; we want to someday establish Skateboarding as a sport that - like Football - is nurtured by the strength of the university.
